Galda Prawn, also known as Giant Freshwater Shrimp, is a premium seafood delicacy widely popular for its sweet flavor and soft texture. Below is a simple yet authentic method to cook Galda Prawn curry.
Ingredients:
6–8 large Galda prawns (cleaned and deveined)
2 tablespoons mustard oil
1 medium onion (finely sliced)
1 tablespoon ginger paste
1 teaspoon garlic paste
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
1 teaspoon cumin powder
Salt to taste
2 green chilies (slit)
1 cup water
Fresh coriander leaves (for garnish)
Cooking Instructions:
Marinate the prawns with turmeric powder and salt. Set aside for 10 minutes.
Heat mustard oil in a pan until it starts smoking lightly, then reduce the heat.
Gently fry the prawns for 1–2 minutes on each side. Remove and keep aside.
In the same oil, add sliced onions and sauté until golden brown.
Add ginger and garlic paste; cook until the raw smell disappears.
Add turmeric, chili, and cumin powder. Stir well on low heat.
Pour in water and bring the gravy to a gentle boil.
Add the fried prawns back into the pan and cook for 5–7 minutes.
Add green chilies, adjust salt, and simmer until oil separates.
Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
Serving Suggestion:
Best enjoyed with plain white rice or basmati rice for a traditional Bengali meal.
